Comprehensive Eye Exam

A comprehensive eye exam thoroughly evaluates your child's vision and eye health. These exams typically involve a series of tests that assess visual acuity, eye tracking and focusing, depth perception, color vision, and more. At Pflugerville Vision Care, we understand that young children may be nervous about these exams, so we take the time to explain each test to them in a kid-friendly way.

Conditions Your Pediatric Eye Doctor Will Be Looking For

There are many potential vision problems that may be identified during an eye exam. Some of the most common conditions your optometrist will look for include lazy eye, crossed eyes, color blindness, and myopia. The pediatric eye doctor will work with you to develop a treatment plan customized based on the test results.

What Information Should I Have Prepared?

There are many things you can do to help your child. First, bring along any medical history or past vision tests. This information will help your optometrist understand where to start. You should also prepare a list of concerns or questions about your child's vision. Ensure your child is well-rested and has eaten before the exam. This will keep them focused and engaged throughout the entire process.

When to Seek Pediatric Eye Care

It is recommended that all children have a comprehensive eye exam prior to beginning kindergarten.  Our optometrists will check your child's vision and evaluate their eyes for any potential problems that could affect your child's ability to perform well in school.  If your children have a family history of eye problems, you may want to bring them in for an exam sooner.

Some symptoms that should prompt you to bring your children in for an eye exam include:

  • Squinting
  • Tilting their heads to see better
  • Sitting too close to the TV or holding books and toys close to their faces
  • Complaining of headaches or blurry vision
  • Difficulty following moving objects with their eyes
  • Rubbing their eyes frequently
  • Poor school performance

What to Expect during a Pediatric Eye Exam

During a pediatric eye exam, our optometrist will use a number of different tests and procedures to evaluate your children's vision. First, we'll have them read an eye chart to test their visual acuity. Next, we'll use a lighted instrument to look at their eyes and check for any signs of disease or other problems.

Our Optomap retinal imaging instrument is great for getting a good view of the  retina and optic nerve without having to dilate the pupils.  However, in some cases we may also use special drops to dilate your children's pupils so that we can get an even better view of the inside of their eyes.  The dilation can also give a better understanding of the need for glasses in certain cases.   After the exam, our optometrist will discuss any findings with you and answer any questions you may have. If we find any problems, we'll develop a treatment plan to help improve your children's vision.

Treatment for Eye Issues

We  can prescribe glasses or contact lenses to help improve your child's vision.   If we find any serious problems, we may refer you to a specialist for further treatment. For instance, we might refer you to a pediatric ophthalmologist for surgery to correct a lazy eye. No matter what, we'll work with you to ensure that your child gets the best possible care.
