Cataract Recovery FAQs

What Are Cataracts?

As we age, cataracts develop because the lens inside of your eye grows from the outside in, packing the old cells into the center of the lens which sits behind the iris (colored part of the eye).  As the older cells discolor,  you will begin to have cloudy vision,  difficulty with night vision, halos around lights, and difficulty telling some colors apart.  You may feel like you need to clean your glasses but it does not help.

Cataracts FAQ

1. How Does the Doctor Diagnose Cataracts?

The cloudy areas of cataracts are visible, which makes them easy to diagnose, but our optometrist will also provide you with a complete examination.

2. Do I Need Surgery Right Away for Cataracts?

Cataract surgery is not typically necessary until the condition advances sufficiently.  If you need eye surgery, the doctor will let you know what to expect.

3. What Happens after Cataract Surgery?

After cataract surgery, your surgical team will let you know what to expect during cataract recovery.  Post op care will include wearing a patch for a day or two.  You will receive a prescription for eye drops to prevent an infection and reduce inflammation which will be used often over the next couple weeks.  You should avoid picking up more than five pounds and bending over face down during that time.  Post op visits will be required the day after surgery, as well as at one week and one month.   Thankfully, our team is here to provide the post op care you might need after surgery so you can recover safely.
